Wasting

‘Wasting’ is the first single from ferna's forthcoming album Understudy and was written shortly after ferna (pronounced fear-na) returned home after two years of completing a masters in composition in the U.S. She was reading Milkman – the Belfast-set, booker-prize winning novel by Anna Burns – at the time and says that the main character’s silent struggle with the oppressiveness of her surroundings struck a chord with her. 

“I think we can all feel a tension between who we feel we are inside and what we feel is safe or acceptable to present on the outside. It obviously can be risky – and sometimes, like in Milkman, unsafe - to put yourself out there warts and all, but on the other hand damage is also done when we are asked to hide ourselves away, over a sustained period of time. So the song’s really chewing that conundrum over, and asking the question - which is the worse fate?”
